Enzo Favata & Tenores di Bitti “Mialinu Pira”
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The a Canto a Tenore, tenore singing of central Sardinia is a fascinating vocal style.
The singing is performed by four male voices: ‘oche, mesu ’oche, bassu and contra; the last two strongly characterise the singing with their guttural sound with an ancestral flavour.
The texts of the secular songs tell stories of solitary shepherds, in close contact with nature; the sacred ones express devotion to the saints and celebrate with solemnity the most important moments of the liturgical year.

MORE
The Tenores di Bitti group “Mialinu Pira” is named after the writer and intellectual Michelangelo Pira, known in Bitti as ‘Mialinu “e Crapinu”.
The quartet is composed of Omar Bandinu, Marco Serra, Bachisio Pira and Arcangelo Pittudu, who have in the past participated in prestigious events and concerts all over the world. With a style less harsh than other vocal styles in Sardinia, exemplary researchers of their own heritage, impeccable performers with exceptional vocal qualities, they have achieved a high level of performance and style, admired throughout Sardinia and the world.
Their frequent appearances on many national television shows. They perfomed in all the world.
Memorable: their participation in 2001 in the IX Christmas Concert in the Vatican broadcast on Canale5 where they had the opportunity to be received in private audience by Pope John Paul II and sing for him some sacred songs from the Bitti tradition; their performance in 2009 at the Concertgebouw theatre in Amsterdam and the concert in Bethlehem in the Basilica of the Nativity.
In spite of its traditional matrix, the group has carried out various projects of musical elaboration of the chant aimed at the valorisation and use of the Tenor in light music, cultured contemporary music and theatre, recording several CDs in Italy and abroad.
The group also often carries out teaching activities at schools and universities with the task of disseminating and safeguarding the local musical heritage. In 2005, tenor singing was listed as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
